Guatamela is so insanely beautiful!!
Spent some time in Guatemala during a recent trip around Central America. Cannot help but feel that it is one of my favourite countries.
The history, landscape, people and culture of this country is truly unique and made for an unbelievable experience. Spending time around the volcanoes in Antigua and Lake Atitlan was a particular highlight.
I visited Flores, Tikal, Antigua, Lake Atitlan and hiked Acatenango and Fuego Volcanoes.

First photo literally looks like a Chinese dragon launching out of the volcano with its mouth open
Was a highlight when we spent 6 months in Latin America last year. Loved Guatemala. I enjoyed seeing your pics taking me back. Fuego was asleep when I went up unfortunately but still a good experience.
Woww! What month did you visit?
Op,
1. Safe?
2. Did you rent a car? How did you get around? Costs?
3. How clean are public toilets?
4. What did you eat? Food costs
@Resourceful246Mountain 1. Felt very safe everywhere I went. No issues walking around at night in Antigua, Lake Atitlan or Flores. I have heard Guatemala City is not as safe, however, having spoken to many locals, it would appear that there is little tourist appeal in the city regardless.
2. I did not rent a car. Got around comfortably using colectivos and shuttles that could be easily organised through hostels. Overall, I found Guatemala to be inexpensive but not dirt cheap. You can probably do it for dirt cheap but it's the type of place where you will need to spend money to do the fun activities - eg. Volcano hikes, tour in Tikal etc
3. I found public toilets to be relatively clean. This isn't Switzerland but at no point did I feel that a place was dirty. Most public toilets require a small fee too.
4. I am a massive foodie and really enjoy sampling food while travelling. I had just been to Mexico and Belize and found the food in Guatemala to be of overall lesser quality and with less variety. With that said, Guatemala does stewed meat very well and would recommend sampling Pepian. You can also expect to find a lot of rice/bean/tortilla dishes albeit with far less variety than in Mexico. In the tourist hubs like Flores, Antigua and Lake Atitlan, you can reasonably expect to pay ~ $10USD for a meal.
